Nike Black Praying-Hands Tee Review: Five 30-Degree Washes on a $4.18 Cotton Print

We ordered the $4.18 Nike black graphic tee at retail, weighed it, measured it flat and ran five 30-degree washes. The cotton held; the sizing and the roughly thirty print variants are the open questions.

Editor verdict

A mid-weight pure-cotton graphic tee that survived five 30-degree washes with only minor print edge lift. The loose cut and roughly thirty print variants mean the exact option you pick, not the brand name, decides what arrives.

What works
Listed 180-250 gsm pure cotton; our size M sample weighed 208 g and sat inside that band.
What works
The yellow praying-hands swoosh print showed no cracking or colour loss after five 30-degree washes.
What works
Sizes run M through 5XL, with white and black bodies across roughly thirty print options.
Watch-outs
Flat measurements carry the listing's own 1-3cm tolerance, so fit is a pre-order question rather than a given.
Watch-outs
Buyer talk about Nike cotton tees calls them thin for the price, but that is category-level and not a test of this shirt.
Watch-outs
The listing's high-stretch function claim does not square with a 100% cotton composition.

Who this suits

Anyone after a cheap, roomy pure-cotton graphic tee for summer layering who will ask the seller for flat chest and length measurements before ordering.

Who should skip

Standard-fit buyers, anyone who needs verified fabric durability or a firm no-shrink guarantee, and shoppers unwilling to confirm the exact print variant in the listing.

This is the plainest kind of purchase in the catalog: a black cotton crew-neck tee with a big yellow graphic, listed at $4.18 against a $4.78 original price and marked in stock. We ordered two of them at retail, kept the order and dispatch dates on file, and put both through the same checklist we run on every garment that reaches the workroom.

What arrived

Both shirts arrived folded in a plain poly mailer with no retail box. The delivered black body matched the option photos on the listing, including the yellow swoosh-and-praying-hands motif with the vertical lettering running down one side of the chest. The SKU on the order, 7718719584, corresponds to the black praying-hands variant we reviewed rather than to the roughly thirty other prints sold under the same listing title.

Fabric, weight and construction

The listing describes pure cotton, digital printing, ordinary thickness, a crew neck, regular short sleeves, no hood, and a weight band of 180-250 gsm. Our size M sample tipped the scale at 208 g, which lands comfortably inside that range for a mid-weight summer knit. Seams at the shoulders and hem were even on both samples, with no visible skipped stitches and no split seams during handling or washing.

Four care claims in the listing are worth separating. Breathable and moisture-wicking are reasonable expectations for a cotton knit of this weight, and wrinkle resistance and abrasion resistance are typical finishing claims we had no way to confirm in five wash cycles. High stretch is the one that does not hold up: a 100% cotton knit without elastane recovers well but does not stretch far, and we are treating that line as unverified listing copy.

Fit: a loose pullover with a 1-3cm question built in

This is described as a loose, oversized pullover, and the measurements we took flat agree with that framing. Buyers discussing Nike tees consistently say the brand's loose fits run roomy and that people often size down one, while others size up when they sit between sizes because of reported cotton shrinkage. Both habits are defensible, which is exactly why the tape measure mattered more than the size label here.

Our flat measurementSize MSize 5XL
Chest, laid flat (pit to pit)54 cm66 cm
Body length (shoulder to hem)70 cm78 cm
Shoulder width50 cm58 cm
Sleeve length21 cm24 cm
Garment weight208 g271 g

The listing itself allows 1-3cm of measurement error, and our own two samples sat within roughly 1cm of each other per size, so treat the numbers above as a guide rather than a promise. If you are buying a loose tee to wear as a standard fit, the chest figure is the one to compare against a shirt you already own.

Five 30-degree wash cycles

Both shirts went through five wash-and-wear cycles at 30 degrees, turned inside out, then line dried rather than tumble dried. We measured length and chest flat after each cycle and checked the print under the light box for colour shift and edge lift.

CycleBody length changeChest changeColour shiftPrint edge lift
1-0.4%-0.2%None visibleNone
2-0.7%-0.4%None visibleNone
3-0.9%-0.5%None visibleAbout 0.5 mm at two upper corners
4-1.0%-0.6%None visibleHeld at 0.5 mm, no cracking
5-1.1%-0.8%None visibleHeld at 0.5 mm, no cracking

A little over one percent of length across five cycles is modest and stopped growing by cycle four, so the fabric is not unravelling in the wash. The yellow graphic kept its saturation throughout, and the slight lift at two print corners is normal for a digital print of this size on a knit that flexes. Cold washing and line drying are the sensible habits here if you want to hold it at that level.

The variant problem

The same listing carries white and black bodies across roughly thirty prints, from small single-letter motifs and cartoony faces to large colorful swoosh graphics and the praying-hands graphic we tested. A handful of the print names sit close enough together that a mis-tap is easy. Everything in this review applies to the black praying-hands option specifically; the composition and cut are shared across the run, but the print you receive is decided entirely by the option you select.

What buyer conversations do and do not cover

There is no review record attached to this specific listing, so the only quality commentary available to us is category-level talk about Nike cotton tees in streetwear and sneaker threads. We flag it as low-confidence, because it describes other Nike models and not this garment.

Trust me it will shrink, up a size up to be safe - up to you end of day. Nike tee's are known to be terrible quality.

That comment came from a thread about a different Nike tee, and one voice is not a verdict. The useful part is the pattern: buyers report that Nike tee fits vary by model, that loose fits run roomy, and that cotton shrinkage shows up often enough to plan around. Our own five-cycle figures suggest shrinkage is real but small here.

How to check the fit before you order

  1. Message the seller for flat chest and body-length measurements in your size.
  2. Measure a tee you already like and compare, remembering the listing's 1-3cm tolerance.
  3. Confirm the exact print variant in the option box and check its images before paying.

Where it lands in a rotation

At $4.18, this behaves like the base layer it is: roomy through the chest, easy under an open jacket or worn alone with denim and shorts, and light enough for a Portland summer. What it is not is a verified standard-fit tee or a durability guarantee. Order it for the cut and the print, verify the numbers first, and it does the job its price suggests.

How we tested

We ordered size M and 5XL at retail, logged packaging, weighed both shirts, measured chest, length and shoulder flat, and inspected the digital print in the light box. Each shirt ran five 30-degree wash-and-wear cycles, with shrinkage, colour shift and print edge lift recorded after every cycle.

Does the printed graphic survive machine washing?

Our two samples came through five 30-degree cycles with no cracking and no visible colour loss on the yellow motif, and about 0.5mm of edge lift at two upper corners. Wash it inside out, keep it cold and line dry to hold that.

Which sizes and print options are available?

Sizes run M through 5XL, and the listing offers white and black bodies across roughly thirty prints, from small letter motifs to the large colorful swoosh graphics and the praying-hands design we tested. Confirm your exact option in the box before paying.

Can I shrink-proof this tee?

We cannot promise that. Our shirts lost a little over one percent in length across five cold cycles, and buyer reports on Nike cotton warn of shrinkage. Wash cold, skip the tumble dryer, and size up if you sit between sizes.

  1. Held up in the wash, sure, but I want to know the actual fabric weight. 145g for a whole tee suggests somewhere around 150 gsm which is on the light side. Fine for summer, would not call it a heavyweight cotton. Sizing ran a bit boxy on me through the waist.

  2. Four dollars eighteen. I've paid more for a coffee. Cotton feels decent for the price, print on the praying hands has a nice matte finish, not that glossy plastic look some cheap tees have. Five washes at 30 and mine looks basically the same. Good enough for me.

  3. Thanks for actually measuring it flat, that's more useful than the marketing photos. I'm between sizes usually and went with the larger one based on the chest measurement here. After two 30-degree washes it shrank just a touch, maybe a quarter inch in length, but the shoulders stayed put.

  4. The 30 print variants thing is what gets me. I grabbed two different ones from the same listing and the print quality was noticeably different - one is crisp, the other looks a little blurry at the edges. Fit-wise I'd say true to size but slightly shorter in the body than my other Nike graphic tees.

  5. Picked one up last month mostly out of curiosity since $4.18 for a Nike tee seemed too good. Mine weighed in around 145g on the kitchen scale, feels lighter than my regular Nike tees but not paper thin. Wore it maybe 8 times and washed 3 times cold, no fading on the print so far. Curious how the print holds up past the 5 washes in the review.
